Battered Republicans Ask to Be Beaten Again

Commentary - Chuck Muth

The recent election of Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea as the GOP's minority leader continues a 15-year Republican tradition in the lower house of raising the white flag before the first shot is even fired.

Republicans in the Assembly apparently aren't just comfortable in their minority status; they have a political death wish. Goicoechea continues the GOP tradition of putting nice-guy political ciphers in charge of running the show and coming in last. The book on Mr. Bipartisan, our new Conciliator-in-Chief:

1.) He's no movement conservative. Goicoechea voted for the ginormous budget increase in 2009 and supported the $300 million room tax hike to help fund it. And his 2009 conservative rating from Citizen Outreach was a paltry 35 percent 'far shy of Ronald Reagan's 80 percent threshold to qualify as a conservative ally.

Jumping for Joy over Sandoval's Education Reform Plan

Commentary - Chuck Muth

Jon Ralston, Dean of Nevada Political Pundits, wrote in his e-newsletter this week that I was “ecstatic” about Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval's education reform proposal.

That was actually a race case of understatement by Mr. Ralston. I mean, what's not to love for conservatives who love education but can't stand the current reality of our lousy government-run public school monopoly?

Just consider some excerpts from the Sandoval proposal:

-“The single greatest thing we can do for our young people is prepare them for success by providing them with a quality education.” (Amen!)

-“As Nevadans, we need to make a world class education for our kids more than a campaign slogan; we must make it a reality.” (Enough talk; time to walk!)

-“The education system in Nevada does not measure up...” (True dat; it sucks!)

-“It's time to get serious about reform and challenge the status quo.” (You betcha!)

-“It's time to give Nevada parents real choices.” (Sing it, brother!) -“It's time for fundamental change... [including] expanded opportunities for choice.” (Praise be!)

-“Opportunity means freeing parents and children who are trapped in failing schools.” (Let our children go!)

-“Vouchers: Choice Should Include Private Schools. Parents should be able to seek out the best possible education for their kids. Whether it is across the street, across town, public or private.” (Glory, glory, hallelujah!)

If that's not something for parents with school-aged children to be ecstatic about, I don't know what is.

The really interesting thing here is that with the exception of school vouchers, Rory REID's education reform plan sounds pretty much the same. Of course, the school voucher private option provision is the key to any true, serious reform - which makes Rory REID's education reform proposal not really serious. It's like saying you can have any car you want, as long as it's a Yugo.

We've been hearing about education reform for more than 50 years now - from new math to whole language to self-esteem to class-size reduction. None of those fads have worked. And despite dumping money on top of more money into these education clunkers, they're still lemons. It's time to give low- and middle-income parents both the right to choose a private school alternative, as well as the means to do so.

If Brian will now campaign on the issue of vouchers, he'll have a mandate from the people to pursue them as governor. And if as governor he truly fights for them using the power of his office and the bully pulpit, they will become a reality, the teachers union be damned.

Hang in there, kids. Help could be on the way!

Hep C Victims Play, Hit Nevada's Lawsuit Lottery

Commentary - Chuck Muth

A licensed, highly-trained professional doctor in Las Vegas reportedly told his licensed, highly-trained professional nurses to reuse syringes to save money, ultimately and not surprisingly resulting in patients who were injected with the dirty needles becoming infected with Hepatitis C.

The victims, naturally and rightfully, sued.  And as per the industry’s standard operating procedure, the lawyers involved decided to include in their lawsuit two of the manufacturers of the drug which was injected into the patients using the dirty needles by the dirty nurses doing the bidding of the dirty doctor because….well, for the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks:

That’s where the money is.

The mind-boggling claim by the victims’ lawyers is that the drug companies failed to sufficiently warn highly-trained professional doctors and highly-trained professional nurses that they shouldn’t inject drugs into patients using syringes which had previously been used.  Duh.

Even more amazingly, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the judge in the case, Jessie Walsh, ruled at the start of the trial “that the drug companies were not allowed to use the ‘dirty doctor’ defense and blame the infection on doctors and nurses misusing the drug.”

What the….?  This is like suing General Motors because someone drove their Chevy to the levy drunk and hit someone.

Nevertheless, a sympathetic jury – and how can you not be sympathetic toward people who put their faith and trust in medical professionals who did something even heroin addicts on the street know not to do? – handed down on Wednesday a guilty verdict against the drug companies totaling over $5 million….and that doesn’t even include punitive damages.

Scott Ashjian, Tea Party Crasher

Commentary - Chuck Muth

User Rating: / 3

Outsiders who aren't part of the tea party movement can't seem to understand why most tea party activists are so opposed to the formation of the Tea Party of Nevada (TPN) party in Nevada - and especially the candidacy of this poseur Scott Ashjian, TPN's pretty-boy candidate for U.S. Senate.

It's really pretty simple - and it goes well beyond that fact that Ashjian doesn't know the secret handshake or the action-inducing code words to use in media interviews.

While he claims to support the agenda and views of the tea party movement, Ashjian's never been actively involved in the tea party movement.  He simply saw all the media coverage of the tea party movement and decided to jump out in front of the parade and say, "Follow me."

But the real tea party activists who have been meeting, organizing and rallying for the better part of the last year know who's who in the movement and know Ashjian isn't one of them because, well, because Ashjian has never had anything to do with the movement.

Is Government “Bad”? Depends on Who You Ask

Commentary - Chuck Muth

In a recent interview, University Regent Mike Wixom said, “What troubles me is there’s this whole underlying notion that government is bad.” Chamber of Commerce lobbyist Steve Hill seconded that emotion. “One of the things that I hope conversations like this can do is get rid of the idea that government is bad,” he said.

In a separate, unrelated interview called “The American Revolution” - conducted more than 225 years ago - founding father George Washington disagreed with both Wixom and Hill.  “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force,” the nation’s first president warned. “Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

In other words, government, if not strictly controlled: bad.
