ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Editorials - Perly Viasmensky

I always find it very nice when a man acknowledges his wife in public; but when it happens in a political debate, it tends to confuse people. During the governor's debate last Sunday regarding issues of education in Nevada , I believe Rory Reid was confusing people every time he said: “When Cindy and I implemented our plan...” Excuse me, but who is running for governor, Rory or Cindy?

Can you imagine the amount of people who became American citizens by the grace of God, because they have no knowledge of history or government of the United States and speak no English at all? Not only that, many of them don't even know how to read or write in their own language and still they became American citizens and I wonder how. If they plan to vote for Rory Reid, not because they have any knowledge of the issues involved, but because their union representatives write his name for them to copy, or friends use them for their own benefits - imagine the problem they will have looking for Cindy's name on the ballot.

Education is very important, indeed. Important to be able to communicate properly with others, important to handle your own affairs, but for nothing else (and I speak from experience). The more educated you are, the less opportunities you have. If you go to apply for employment and you find yourself before a Yo-Yo looking stupid and believing he is God's gift to earth, he or she would tell you “You are over qualified.”

What Exactly IS a Police Officer's Job?

Editorials - Perly Viasmensky

I cannot say that I was surprised by the outcome of the Coroner's Inquest on the death of an unarmed 21-year-old victim, Trevon Cole.

It is a common practice for jurors, apparently hand-picked by the District Attorney's Office, to rule in favor of police officers. I say “apparently” because, as difficult as it is to believe, the Coroner's Office has no knowledge of how these jurors are picked, selected or chosen. At least, this is what I was told by some lady in that office.

It was just another travesty of justice, the same as all those other travesties since 1976, when the first coroner's inquest took place in Clark County.

Don't expect your neighbors to be your servants - be a responsible pet owner!

In a recent conversation with my dogs' veterinarian, I asked him how to get rid of, or send away, unwanted cats from my property, because I have tried different things and none of them worked. The doctor told me I never will until people stop feeding all cats in the neighborhood, or cats' owners take responsibility for their pets.

My front and back yards look like a jungle, full of cats; in just one single night I have as many as six cats resting on my lawn, and this is costing us lots of money in doctors' visits. Not only that, my dogs are sacrificed on their own property, since we cannot let them out to enjoy themselves like any other normal animal who gets to enjoy its own yard. All those unwanted visitors have taken possession of my house and it seems there is nothing I can do about it. My house is all fenced and gated, and my dogs are never allowed to go outside and disturb the peace of neighbors, but my own peace is being torn to pieces.

It is common knowledge that if a dog sees a cat, it is going to run after it, trying to chase it into a fence, which has already caused a dislocation to my dog's leg. That cost money, and veterinarians are not cheap.

I wonder where this country is going and what life has in store for us

There is no longer any respect for the deceased: memorials in cemeteries are being vandalized, and sexual intercourse is even taking place on some loved one's final resting place. Doctors are ignoring the oath they took to save lives. In the name of monetary interests, many doctors are mistreating people. Nurses don't give a moment to the patients under their care, whether babies or seniors. Attorneys no longer care if their clients are going free or sent to death row. Prosecutors are sending innocent people to prison for the pleasure of adding another notch (name or number) to one of those little (good for nothing) plaques they get when off they go into private practice. That life in prison is nothing compared to the higher number that gets put on that plaque: “John Doe, Esq. won X amount of cases during his time with the District Attorney's office.” Of course they will then hang that useless plaque on the wall of their new office, impressing people with their trophy of a number of human lives, locked up, knocked down, and possibly killed.

For the money charged nowadays for funerals, funeral homes should at least have a couple of security guards protecting the premises. Some security guards claim they are afraid to be left alone, at night, in a cemetery. Afraid of whom? the spirits, or the criminals hanging around? But nobody is afraid to go to a cemetery to steal the copper vases from the graves to make money at the expense of the family of those who passed on before us.

I am very proud to say that I am a Funeral Director in a state other than Nevada. That state is famous for the practice of witchcraft. The funeral home, which I worked at, was located on the same grounds as the cemetery, just as Davis Funeral Home is. At the end of the last shift, it was our duty to drive around the cemetery to secure the graves entrusted to us. Only once I encountered a missing soul, and believe me he was not a spirit, he was very much alive and police officers took him to where he belonged – the county jail.

Lady Justice is blind, but not deaf

If it weren't for the determination of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and the persistence of Sheriff Joe Arpaio regarding the immigration crisis in Arizona, the federal government would still be seated on their behind and neglecting their duties.

The Arizona law, scheduled to take effect July 29, makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. It states that an officer engaged in a lawful stop, detention or arrest shall, when practicable, ask about a person's legal status when reasonable suspicion exists that the person is in the U.S. Illegally.

We all need to remember that if you are caught in Mexico without documentation they are not going to give you the opportunity to breathe and you are sent directly to sleep on the stone bed (cama de piedra), unless you come up with a good amount of dollar bills.

Many consider the law racially motivated. In my opinion this is very far from the truth. If I make an illegal U-turn or left turn and a police officer stops me, does that give me the right to tell him, “You racist, how dare you ask me for my driver's license and proof of insurance.” The law is the law, regardless of the circumstances.
